Define Your Success

When you look up success, there are multiple definitions. One of the ones that stand out to me is one that states that success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. We would all like to believe that we have a purpose on this earth.

But, are you actively seeking a purpose or an aim for your life? What does success mean to you? Knowing your definition of success will help you with your goals. After all, who wants to be stuck accomplishing a goal that doesn’t get them towards their dream? No one. But, if you don’t define your definition of success and do it soon, you might be stuck doing just that.

Typically, when someone says they want to be successful, you think about a huge house, corporate person, celebrity, rich, etc. But, what if that’s not your version of success? Have you ever thought about what will make you successful?

Maybe you want to write 1 book a year. Maybe you do want the stereotypical success with 4 cars and a 7- bedroom mansion with 8.5 baths. Maybe you just want to be able to say that you love your job. What is your definition of success? Define it now and you will be glad you did.

Don’t let other people’s version of success influence yours. Think about it. What makes you truly happy? What are you passionate about? Where do you want to live?

Dream like you were a child again and make it happen. When you were a child you were free to dream but you didn’t have the resources to make them happen. Now, you are an adult with logic, skills, and reason.

Don’t let all that logic and reason bring you down and discourage you. Use it to find a way to achieve your success. I stress goals every day but, but what are goals without a vision of what success means to you, nothing.

Realize that your success is a small house in the country. It is being able to stay home with your family when needed. Your success is unique.

Do not subscribe to the mass-marketed version of success. Break the mold! Success is not based on anyone else but yourself. You are not competing with others! You are competing with yourself.

Define your success with these steps:

What are you passionate about?

Can you do it for a living? If so, How? Passion can drive you even in times where the job gets rough.

You know the stereotypical saying, “If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.” That holds true. It wouldn’t be so popular if it wasn’t.

Do you like your profession?

Why or why not? How can you fix it if you do not like your profession?

You spend so much of your time at work. A huge part of whether you feel successful has to do with where you are and what you are doing 25% of your day.

What are your core and personal values?

Does your job match up with that? Discrepancies between your values and what the company you may work for values can create some dissonance in your life.

Do you have time to do what you love or be with your loved ones?

Even 5 minutes of doing something you love can help. Too much work can drain you even if you do love your job. Connecting with people we love help us to feel less lonely even when we are alone.

People who feel connected to others tend to be happier. Happy people tend to feel more successful and optimistic about their lives. And, I don’t just mean outwardly happy. Are you really happy?

How are your finances?

People avoid their own finances. But it plays a huge role in our success. You don’t have to be rich. But, being able to afford your food and avoid being evicted help.

Overall, I just want you to think about what success is to you and what it would take to get you to that level of success. Then, run with it! Go ahead and create goals that drive you towards your success story.

I will not say that you will never lack motivation or lose passion, but it will definitely be easier to challenge that motivation. Your affirmations will become more real, your resilience will rise, and gratitude will become a little more natural when you are happier and on your way to true success.

  1. Success can mean different things to different people at different stages and ages. Ultimately success can be felt by finding inner peace, happiness and satisfaction and nothing to do with others. Thanks for sharing your current perspective on success. Great to see values and depth shining through in your definition 🙂
