How to Connect to Your Why

So, you read my previous post, Are Your Goals Losing Value? Now, you’re ready to apply my advice into actual practice. Easier said than done, right?

Connect to your why factor. How do you even do that? What does that even mean?

It’s actually quite easy. Your why is your driving factor. What drives you? You only have to answer three questions to find your why factor.

First, think of a goal that you have. Bring it to the forefront of your mind. Can you see it? Good.

Why is that goal important?

People often set goals without ever thinking about why they set these goals. You can’t always set absentminded goals. You have to be intentional. Intentionality is a major part of connecting to your why factor.

Why did you set the goal? Why is it important? You want to get good grades this semester. Did you set the goal because you feel as if you can do better or because you feel as if you are falling behind? Do you need good grades to get a scholarship to stay in school? Ask yourself why for every goal.

What will happen if you do not reach your goal?

Have you ever acted on something because you didn’t want the alternative to happen? Well, this is the same concept. Your goal is to make an extra $400 dollars this month.

If you do not read that goal, then you will be over the budget $300 this month. That means that with your financial aid, there will be a month where you will have to survive on $700. Knowing yourself, you know that is completely impossible.

That will definitely make you know why you are struggling to make more money or save extra money this month.

How will my life change if I reach my goal?

This is the obvious way to connect to your why. You want to get a job at your dream company. How will your life change if you got the job?

Would you have more flexibility in your schedule? Imagine yourself traveling and spending time with family. Will you be more autonomous at your dream job?

Imagine working with no one looking over your shoulder every 5 minutes. Will you make more money? You will have more money to save and use to your discretion after you pay the bills now.

Connecting to Your Why is Easy

If you ask these questions for all your goals, you will be able to connect to your why factor. You will find what drives you to become successful.

If you ever find yourself doubting your goals, just remember why you made the goal in the first place. Give value to your goals again and allow yourself to succeed at your goals. Now, go and find what drives you!
