Put Yourself First

It’s Christmas Eve! Hopefully, life has not been too hectic with all the Christmas preparation. If it has, here are some things to try after the chaos dies down. I’ll give you a hint. It requires you to put yourself first.

When life gets hectic, sometimes the last thing you are thinking about is your personal needs. But trust me, you need it. Putting yourself first can actually be instrumental in increasing motivation and productivity. I’m sure we all want to be more motivated and productive this upcoming year. Here are some tips on how to put yourself first and no, it does not include a spa day. Sometimes a spa day just doesn’t cut it.

Don’t do anything.

Yep, you read that right. Don’t do anything. Chances are you do everything for everyone all the time. You need a day or at least a couple of hours to not do anything. Let go of your To-do lists. Take a day to be lazy and do what you actually want to do.  Say no to people. Stop checking emails. Put your phone on Do Not Disturb. You deserve it.

Spend time with yourself.

Become self-aware. This allows you to learn exactly when you are about to burn-out or become stressed. If you know your burn-out symptoms, sometimes you can prevent it before it’s too late. For me, I start becoming more fatigued and feeling overwhelmed which leads to epic procrastination. When I notice these things, I have to remind myself to slow down.

Invest in your personal growth.

Pay yourself first and use that money to invest in growth opportunities. What do you need to make yourself a better person? These are not material things but, investments in education and networks that may double its return on investment in some years. Invest in becoming a better you. If you enjoy cooking, invest in improving your cooking skills with classes. Invest in your network and meeting other people that can expand your network.

Invest in your future financial security.

Financial instability can hurt your mental health. Make sure you provide some stability if possible. Put aside some savings for emergencies. Create a budget for your regular spending and make sure it includes your non-negotiable expenditures such as daily coffee. Don’t make your budget so strict that it stresses you out even more. Know what you can eliminate to save and what you absolutely must have. Invest in bonds, stocks or mutual funds. Get a side hustle that helps get you extra spending money. Educate yourself on money so you do not have to stress about it.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert? I’m an introvert so doing a lot of extroverted things can exhaust me. It doesn’t mean I do not like being social, I just get tired of it really quickly and need to recharge. Recharging for me as an introvert means being alone for a while. For other people, being with friends and being social recharges them. Know what works for you and make sure that you have time to do what re-charges you especially if you frequently have to do things that are out of your comfort zone.

Consider seeking the help of a professional before things get too crazy.

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to be crazy or rich before you need to see a professional about your mental health. In fact, it’s best to see a professional before things go downhill. It’s time to put yourself first.
