Realize Your Self-Worth

Your friends see it. Your family sees it. Strangers see it. You have value. When are you going to see it? When are you going to realize your self-worth? When are you going to realize that you have power?

You are more than just a student, a worker, an ordinary person. Your title does not define your self-worth. Self-worth has to do with your own value or worth as a person.

It is who you are, not what you do. Self-worth has nothing to do with your profession or lack of profession. Self- worth is not comparing yourself to anyone else or any external values.

So that means that your self-worth is not measured by your grades, beauty/handsomeness, hair or lack of hair. You do not want to measure your value by external things. Because those things can easily disappear.

What happens when you are no longer a student? What happens if your looks fade? Where is your self-worth now?

So, how do we measure our value?

Measure it out of the things that are inherently you. We are all unique. There is only one you on this earth and that means that you are a rare gem.

You, my friend, have value. It’s time to realize your self-worth.

How do you realize your self-worth?

Well, it might take a while. But the steps are simple.

Stop comparing yourself with strangers, your neighbors, your friends, your boss, and your siblings.

Just stop it! Everyone has their own path. Some may take a little longer but you’ll get to the end goal just the same, right?

You are the only one judging yourself and how long it takes you to get that dream job. You are your only competition! But don’t take that self-competition stuff too far.

Sometimes you can be your own worst critic. This is where I think what I here in yoga comes in handy. The most common thing I here during yoga is, “Feel where your body is today. Today’s body is not yesterday’s body.”

Meaning that you may not be at the same level you were at yesterday. Sometimes you’re better and sometimes you’re worse. And that’s okay. As long as you are making general progress towards your goal, it’s fine.

Not every day will be productive. Allow yourself grace for your shortcomings. And be grateful for being able to be where you are today.

Stop allowing your self-worth to be dependent on what others think about you.

You are worthy without the approval of anyone. You matter. Tell yourself that you matter every day because you do.

If you don’t believe it, say it until you do. Realize that it’s okay to love yourself. You don’t have to be perfect to love yourself. Because, newsflash! No one is perfect even those who appear to be perfect have their flaws. They just can hide their cracks well.

Accept yourself as you are.

Accept the you that trip over air. Accept that you have awkward socializing skills. Accept that you love learning and reading. And accept that you enjoy dancing when no one is watching.

I’m not saying that you have to become complacent in life. Improvement is great. But do not base your worth on how much you can improve because sometimes things don’t happen as planned.

Get to know yourself.

Know what makes you happy, what makes you proud and what makes you unique. You value yourself more when you see what makes you unique. Learn what your strengths are.

Part of developing self-worth is developing self-love. It is also developing self-acceptance and self-understanding. So, I implore to you realize your self-worth.

Quiet down your internal critic. And stop tying your worth to your job, appearances, money or popularity. You are valuable without all of those things and once you realize that you will have self-worth.

  1. Great post! I especially liked this quote: “I’m not saying that you have to become complacent in life. Improvement is great. But do not base your worth on how much you can improve because sometimes things don’t happen as planned.”
I love self-improvement, but sometimes it’s a fine line between self-improvement and self-criticism. One is helpful, one is not. Enjoyed your thoughts!
