Have you ever seen those articles where they talk about successful people and what time they start their day? Of course, you have. They are everywhere. well, I have a problem with that. Who wants to get up at 4:30 AM? No one.
Unless you have insomnia, something that really needs to be done (you procrastinated with a project), or your job starts at some hellish hour, I really do not see the point of killing yourself to wake up everyday at 4:30 AM.
People are going to tell you that you can’t sleep in if you want to make things happen. But, that does not mean you have to be sleep-deprived. Sleep-deprived people do not make the best decisions. If you are waking up at 4:30 AM, I hope you at least went to sleep at 9 PM and got 7.5 hours of sleep.
I’m sure that didn’t happen because, of course, life. Also, it’s dark outside when you wake up and it will stay that way for a couple of hours. You are working against your circadian rhythm. But, I digress. We all have 24 hours in a day but, each of us uses that 24 hours differently.
People who commute spend a lot of their 24 hours in transit. People with children and families have to dedicate time towards their children and families. If you have to work 2 jobs, your 24 hours is definitely different. If you want to sleep in on your off day and wake-up at 9:30 AM or even 12 PM to start your day, I support you.
Waking up at 4:30 AM to work on our dreams is not feasible for everyone. It does not mean you shouldn’t work on your dreams but, what I am trying to say is that the dream-making schedule is going to be a little different for everyone. It needs to be different for some people.
Working on your dreams is not always a dream, Sometimes, it’s a nightmare. You are occasionally going to need a break from it. Sometimes you will only get to designate 5 minutes and sometimes you may get to designate 3 hours towards your dreams.
Just because Tim Cook of Apple wakes up at 3:45 AM (Does he even sleep?) and Oprah wakes up before the crack of dawn, does not mean that you have to wake up that early to be successful.
The only things you need to do are these four things.
- Find your intrinsic motivators and capitalize on them because extrinsic motivators will only get you so far once things start going down the drain.
- Be disciplined. Motivation can only take you so far. We all have the motivation to be successful at first.
- Find times that work for you daily. The times might vary daily or it may be the same time every day.
- Know when to take a break and really let go in order to refresh. Avoid burn-out.
If I had to wake up at 4:30 AM everyday to get my goals done, I would cry. I would also be very slow. I can barely register my life in my mind at 6AM. What goals am I reaching?
If you are a night person, dedicate the night to yourself and your dreams. If you are a morning person, wake up a little earlier (within reason, you know how early you are able to function). Whether you dedicate 5 minutes or 50 minutes, it is important that you dedicate some time to your dream. You work for someone else’s dream all day, why not dedicate some of that time towards yourself.
You can learn a new language you always wanted to learn, start a side business, or learn some skill that you always wanted to do. Just because you did not start at 4:30 AM, does not make your time and efforts any less valid than the successful people. The question is how efficient do you make your time but, that is a discussion for another day.
