Why Can’t You Have It All?

Sleep, health-and-fitness, social life, family, or success? Pick three. Why can’t we have it all? Why does one or all have to suffer?

This past week has been so hectic. I ended up pulling an all-nighter on Friday just to pull through my final exam. Thank God for my highly caffeinated Yogi Tea! It’s a wonder how I was not sleepy after being awake for over 24 hours.

Anyways, I had several group activities and assignments due during the week alongside various quizzes and a final exam. It was just a lot. There was also a mandatory activity that was assigned to us out of our school hours on Tuesday and Thursday.

Between all that, and some few extracurricular activities, I was just trying to float through life until all my floating culminated into frustration. Why can’t I have it all? Sleep, fitness, family, social life and success.

The thing that I usually never renege on is sleep and I had to let it go this week, unwillingly. I try to hold on to fitness but, every now and then I let that go. It’s ok. But, sleep! That is my priority. This week my priorities had to be rearranged so I could put my success first.

This was a life or death situation, well not really. I just was not trying to get my first C in pharmacy school in a 5 credit class. That would destroy my GPA and make my chances of keeping my meager scholarship even harder. I don’t know what the prognosis is yet but, I will keep you all informed. Anyways, back to the topic at hand.

Why can’t we have it all?

I was wondering this as I did jumping jacks to stay awake before my tea kicked in. Why can’t 7-8 hours of sleep be a normal thing? When I tell people this, they are like, what? You need 7-8 hours!

Yeah, so do you but, you have probably made your body compensate over the years with caffeine or you just adjusted. Try getting 7 to 8 hours for a whole week and your energy levels hit a whole new level.

Why can’t I have time for fitness and health too?

The recommended daily activity is 150 minutes a week of moderate activity. I would love to eat well and eat home-cooked meals but, sometimes cooking is not a part of our 24 hours.

We have work or school then, family and friends that we have kind of sort of been ignoring for a while. Now, they’re getting antsy. They’ve waited for too long. How hard is it to do these simple five things and be successful at them?

It is difficult, surprisingly difficult. We can plan to cook at home, go to the gym five days a week, hang out with friends, answer the phone when mom calls, and still study every day so we don’t fall behind but, life happens.

Cooking takes a little bit longer than you budgeted time for, you get unexpected assignments that have to be added in addition to studying for the class, but your friend who you’ve kind of ignored because you were busy last week is inviting you to a birthday dinner, and you need to call home.

Life gets crazy sometimes and there will be periods where you can and will have it all but, the majority of the time you might not. It’s just up to you to figure out how you are going to roll with the waves.

You can have it all if you know when to remove some things just to put them back in the loop after a little break. I guess what I am trying to say here is that life is a juggling act.

You will not always have all the balls in your hand. You just have to figure out how many things you are content with juggling and when to take a break. We need breaks sometimes. Life gets overwhelming but, just ride it out and it will get better soon.

Sometimes, I see my challenges as a future testimony so I inspire someone else to go through life. Realistically, we can’t have it all but, we all love trying.

Anyways, thanks for listening to my rant,
